This is Prince and Mercer Streets. This is how Soho looked in around '77 or '78 when you had to hunt to find the galleries. My wife and I used to go the Prince Street Bar often and look across to this scene.The painting was made decades later. The "Cafe" in the painting is of course Fanelli's, still at that location. But Prince Street Bar is, alas, no more. The first work I ever sold in New York was a watercolor of a dusty facade at Broadway and Prince, just up the street from this scene.
